Goa was a Portuguese colony having been colonised in the sixteenth century. After India gained independence in 1947, Goa would follow in the same footsteps in 1961. In 1987 it became India’s twenty-fifth state. Goa, the country’s smallest state, lies on the west coast of India which is washed by the Arabian Sea. Evidence of its Portuguese heritage is evident in its food, its architecture and its culture.
